In 2006 the US State Department seconded Brian to a diplomatic posting in Tbilisi, Georgia, where together with his wife and their children he lived during the August 2008 Russian occupation. Many threads subsequently woven into "Wonkus" began as bedside stories for their older son, whom the war deeply affected. Spontaneous accounts of birds flocking in reverse, a two-headed know-it-all, and Kedra and Fruku, the crafty twins who triumph over adversity, helped the young boy to sleep peacefully through the night.

The healing effect of these tales encouraged Brian to share them with other children. "Adventures in Throgwottum Glen: Wonkus" fulfills a promise to his sons to develop a full-length work in the classic tradition. The series is inspired by moral imagination, and consequently written in a style intended to expand the creative and intellectual horizons of the reader.
