By design, the book never specifies where, precisely, the Glen is located, or what exactly lies beyond, although the story certainly takes place in wooded northern climes. The river valley setting likely results from the author's postings to Tbilisi and Vienna. Travels to Scotland and Scandinavia also influenced the literary landscape and the names of various characters.

The beloved brackawack berries may well resemble sea buckthorn chanced upon near Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan. Inclusion of a karst, home of The Mudupan, was sparked by a visit to Las Cuevas del Drach in Majorca, Spain, and the jinjibar trees might look like the flora of the Mediterranean. In reality these sundry influences would not comingle. But such is the world of fantasy that readers of different backgrounds might find something familiar in the Glen.
